“We zijn ondernemers, we houden niet van regels, en zouden die waarschijnlijk toch verbuigen – maar we hanteren wel een paar principes die bepalen hoe we ons werk doen”, schrijven de organisatoren van Angel Island, een event dat woensdag plaatsvond in het kader van Amsterdam Capital Week.
Doelgroep zijn de 500 founders en investeerders die op een van de negen boten (of kitesurfend) arriveerden op het groene vlekje in het IJmeer. Werd het fort eind 19e eeuw gebouwd om aanvallen vanuit de Zuiderzee af te kunnen slaan, tijdens Angel Island (thema dit jaar: ‘Circus X Military’) biedt het fort bescherming tegen assholes, naambadges, pitches en pakken-met-stropdas.
Niet dat er geen zaken worden gedaan; Sprout sprak meerdere ondernemers die het eiland zullen verlaten met de contactgevens van een van de ‘engels’ uit Angel Island. Maar de sfeer is er vooral ontspannen, intiem en – dankzij ontbreken van naambadges – egalitair.
Dankzij deze 10 geboden mag Angel Island zich met recht een unconference noemen:
1. Asshole free zone
We’ve worked hard to curate the group of people that will be on the island. Embrace the pay-it-forward mentality, stay open minded and help one another. If in doubt, just remember, don’t be an asshole.
2. Freedom of identity
Name badges are an environmental disaster and create the wrong vibe. Get to know a person by saying “hello”, instead of speaking to a job title on a badge. If you’re a bit shy, just ask others to introduce you the people they already talked to.

3. Pitches suck
Please come with the intention to build relationships & trust with the people you will meet. Pitching is the worst possible way to do this, so leave your deck at home.
4. Social reality
Whilst we’d love for you to do our marketing for us, please try to be in the moment by connecting with real people rather than their social media accounts.
5. Peacocks are for Wall Street
Leave your suit & tie home; dress up in the theme of the island, or just come as you are, and remember to check the weather forecast before you leave home.
6. Take care of yourself
There will be plenty of activities on the island, all designed to get people talking and connected. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s fine to leave an activity, but it’s not cool to crash into someone else’s. There’s plenty of space to take a break and restore your energy.
7. YOLO – kind of
We’re on an island, please feel free to go wild, but remember that safety for yourself and those around you goes first. Make sure to let the organizing team know what you’re planning!
8. The party continues after the sun goes down
Make the most of the event & stay till the end! We just hate to see you leave.
9. Honey over money
All of the organisers have been working hard and do so on a voluntary basis. Feel free to pay them in hugs and compliments.
10. JOMO in place of FOMO
You can’t possibly meet everyone on the island. Don’t succumb to the Fear Of Missing Out – make the best of the people you do meet. We call this the Joy Of Missing Out.
